On dog holes – i put where i need them! also (as my bench proves) where (sometimes) i don’t need them! ok, so not so cool but that is the reality of the matter.. Bench dogs allow you to hold longer pieces between the dog positioned on the outside vise jaw and the dog positioned in the appropriate bench-dog hole along the workbench. dog holes can also be aligned from the front to the back of the workbench and used with a face vise.. In addition to bench dogs (explained well by doresoom above), there are other devices that use the same holes. a holdfast uses the thickness of the bench to hold down a piece of wood with no additional clamps..
